What are AI fashion models, and should your brand use them?
AI fashion models are people generated by AI who wear your real product in photos and videos. Brands use them to show clothing, shoes, jewellery and beauty products on a body without booking models, a studio or a location. Done well, they look real and keep the product exactly as it is. Done badly, they change the product and break the buyer's trust.
What an AI fashion model is
An AI fashion model is not a real person. The face, body, pose, hair, light and setting are generated. The product is not invented: it comes from photos of your real garment or accessory and is placed on the generated model.
You can keep the same model across a whole collection, or show the same product on different ages, skin tones, sizes and styles. Some brands also use a digital version of a real model who has agreed to it and is paid for it.
Why brands use AI models
The main reason is volume. In a Salesforce survey, 78% of marketers said they need more content than they can produce. On model images are the most expensive kind to produce, because every new look needs a model, a stylist, a studio and a day.
Ads need new images too. Motion's Creative Benchmarks 2026 put the median life of an ad creative at 18 days, and in a Meta experiment ad sets with 3 to 10 creatives had a 46% lower median cost per action than ad sets with one. AI models make it realistic to give every product several on model images and to keep them fresh.
- Every product on a model, not only the hero products.
- The same look in every format: 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 and 16:9.
- Different models for different markets and audiences.
- New scenes for new seasons, without shipping samples.
Where AI models work best
- Ecommerce product pages, next to ghost mannequin and detail images.
- Lookbooks and campaign visuals with one consistent model.
- Paid social ads, where you need many variants to test.
- Jewellery, watches and accessories worn on hands, wrists and necks.
- Beauty and skincare shown in use, with the packaging kept exact.
Keeping the product accurate
This is the part that matters most. A buyer who receives a different colour, cut or print returns it and does not trust the brand again. AI tends to tidy up products: it can straighten a pattern, change a shade or drop a small logo.
At Novaia there are no shoots, but people art direct and retouch every image. Each one is checked against the real product before delivery: colour, fabric texture, pattern placement, stitching, logos and hardware. Send clear photos of the product in daylight and close ups of the details, and the result stays true.
Platform rules and AI labelling
AI generated people are allowed in ads, but they must be honest. Meta and TikTok label AI generated content and have their own disclosure rules, and TikTok asks for a label on realistic AI generated content.
In the European Union, Article 50 of the EU AI Act sets transparency duties for AI generated or manipulated images and videos that could pass as real. In practice, plan to disclose it clearly.
Never present an AI model as a real customer or use one to fake a review or a result. Rules change, so check the current platform policies and ask your legal adviser before launch.
AI models or a real shoot?
Use a real shoot when the person is the message: a famous face, a founder, a creator with an audience or a real customer story. Use AI models when you need many products, looks, formats and markets covered quickly and consistently.
Many brands do both. A real campaign shoot sets the look once, and AI keeps the catalogue and the ads full between shoots.
